heliumTALK - das Kunstgespräch

Begleitend zu ihrer Einzelausstellung „Painting the virtual mind“ führte Melvin ein Künstlerinnengespräch mit der Malerin Susannah Martin. Die Ausstellung läuft vom 20. Oktober bis 10. November 2023 in "The MISSION by heliumcowboy“, der neuen heliumcowboy Pop Up-Galerie gleich um die Ecke des Stammhauses. Susannah Martin präsentiert ihre beeindruckenden hyperrealistischen Werke, in denen Figuren durch üppige, wilde Landschaften wandern und mit großen Augen verwirrt auf ihre Umgebung blicken. Sie betrachtet das Malen von Aktfiguren als Fortsetzung einer langen Reihe von Künstler*innen, die den menschlichen Körper als Zeichen für das verwenden, was sie als den Menschen im reinsten Zustand bezeichnet. Dieser unverfälschte Zustand der Harmonie mit der Natur steht im Gegensatz zu den künstlichen Umgebungen, die unsere urbane Existenz beherbergen. Martins Figuren sehen oft unbeholfen aus und stehen im Widerspruch zu den ungezähmten Wäldern, in denen sie sich befinden, was auf unsere kollektive Unzufriedenheit mit dem Leben auf dem Land hinweist. Ihre Bilder bieten uns voyeuristische Einblicke in das Leben dieser Figuren, die ihre Fassade abstreifen und die Natur in ihrer Schönheit und ihrem Schrecken erleben.

Am 16. September 2023 eröffnet Melvin die erste Ausstellung im Rahmen von "The MISSION by heliumcowboy“, seiner neuen Pop Up-Galerie gleich um die Ecke des Stammhauses. Mit Linda Böse X Larissa Kerner zeigt er wir die Arbeiten der zwei herausragenden Hamburger Künstlerinnen erstmals gemeinsam. Vorab gibt es hier schon einmal den Podcast mit beiden, den Melvin am 12.9. im Hamburger Studio auf der Ranch aufgenommen hat. Linda und Larissa stehen für zwei sehr unterschiedliche künstlerische Ausdrucksformen, die in einem spannenden Kontrast zueinander stehen. Linda arbeitet ausschließlich mit reduzierter Farbgebung und plastischen Texturen und schafft damit faszinierende Kontraste, während Larissas Kunstwerke bunt, poppig und extravagant sind. Durch diese einzigartige Kombination entsteht eine beeindruckende Dynamik zwischen den beiden Künstlerinnen.

New format, old format: In this (english) Episode, Melvin talks with artist David Shilinglaw about his new exhibition "Psychogeography" at the heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg (Opening April 28, 6 pm, exhibition until June 16.) Meanwhile Jörg was in the countryside, digging a deep hole in his 1866 farmhouse, so this is a one-on-one between the gallerist and his artist. You can also listen to past episodes with David here at heliumtalk - this is the third time David came for a chat: Episodes #33 (February 2019) and #76 (April 2020) About David Shillinglaw: David Shillinglaw is a Margate-based artist who has made a name for himself with his distinctive blend of street art and fine art. His work is often characterised by its bold colours, intricate patterns and whimsical imagery. His art explores themes of identity and the human condition, be it a complex anatomical diagram or a simple stick figure. Drawing on ideas from ancient mythology and pop culture, the artist creates a dialogue between the historical and the contemporary. Shillinglaw often paints directly onto found objects, creating an open relationship between himself and his changing environment. Shillinglaw made his debut in Germany at heliumcowboy, in 2015, when the artist came to Hamburg for his first solo show in Germany. The show was titled Remote Control. Now, 8 years later, the artist finally comes back and will present new works with his new exhibition "Psychogeography", which deals with the concept of psychogeography.

Die dritte Ausgabe des neuen heliumTALK-Formats - einem offenen Gespräch zwischen Jörg Heikhaus (aka Alex Diamond, 54) und Melvin Heikhaus (24), zwischen Künstler und Galerist, zwischen Vater und Sohn, hat auf sich warten lassen - es war einfach zu viel los bei uns. Wir lassen noch einmal die große Alex Diamond Ausstellung „It’s all good“ in der Barlach Halle K in Hamburg Revue passieren und geben tiefe Einblicke in die Entstehung, Vorbereitung und Hintergründe eines solchen Mammutprojektes. Ein ehrliches Fazit gibt es auch und Melvin erzählt, was dieses Jahr in seiner Galerie alles noch so kommen wird, unter anderem feine Ausstellungen und seine erste Kunstmesse als Head Honcho von heliumcowboy.

Wir reden über unsere Einschätzung der Bedeutung von Online-Verkäufen in der Kunst, über Platformen wie Artsy und Co und beurteilen das Ganze mal nach 2 Jahren Corona. Hat sich das Verhalten der Kunden verändert? Im zweiten Teil gibt es dann ein Interview mit Jens Rausch, der am Freitag den 8. April seine vierte Einzelausstellung bei heliumcowboy eröffnet. Es ist auch Melvin's erste Vernissage in diesem Jahr. Diesmal sassen wir nicht gemeinsam im Studio in Hamburg, sondern 150 km voneinander getrennt - Jörg war zur Aufnahme im Atelier auf dem Land und da dann auch noch in Quarantäne. Verrückte Zeiten.

Okay. Der Titel dieser Episode des heliumTALK könnte leicht irreführend sein. Aber - es gibt ein neues Konzept, eine erweiterte Besetzung und veränderte Inhalte in diesem Relaunch des Podcasts, der - zunächst als TV-Format - immerhin schon seit 2016 existiert, zuletzt aber etwas stiller geworden ist. Im Jahr 2022 wird der heliumTALK zu einem offenen Gespräch zwischen Jörg Heikhaus (aka Alex Diamond, 54) und Melvin Heikhaus (24), zwischen Künstler und Galerist, zwischen Vater und Sohn. Thema bleibt natürlich die Kunst. Aber hört doch einfach mal rein in diese erste Episode, wir erklären das alles und geben auch schonmal einen Einblick in das aktuelle Ausstellungsjahr, das gleichzeitig das 20jährige Jubiläum von heliumcowboy markiert. For the new episode of my podcast #heliumTALK I spoke with the Georgian painter Rusudan Khizanishvili. In a world full of new painters rising up constantly (it seems), her colorful, intense and beautiful work stands out for quite some time now. Only recently Rusudan had a large exhibition in Berlin’s 68projects / Kornfeld Galerie (curated by Nina Mdivani), where her stunning figurative paintings caught my attention … well, as almost everybody else, I just saw it on the web, but I was super curious so I got in touch with her and we had this very enjoyable conversation for heliumTALK number 84.

A new heliumTALK episode! For show number 83 I spoke with Benjamin Murphy, visual artist, writer, curator and lecturer and co-founder of the nomadic Delphian Gallery. After a pretty long break for all those many reasons I have been talking about in the introductions to the previous episodes, I decided to get back into the podcast game, there are simply too many people still that I am so curious about that I tweaked the format of heliumTALK a bit so it doesn’t take a whole day in postproduction etc. I won’t bore you with the details, but production wise these are a lot easier to make for me now, one big chunk I got rid of are the intros for example, I go right into the interview, etc…. But it’s still what to expect from a good heliumTALK-show. So. I do hope you continue to enjoy them. I had the pleasure of talking to the wonderful Isabel Croxatto from Chile. We have been trying to connect for some time and it finally worked out, she is usually ultra busy with her gallery, which has been growing large over the past decade. Isabel is coming from a very creative background, she has been a choreographer, and she speaks from the heart about her very personal artistic view on what art means for her and does for people who are willing to open up to it. Isabel usually travels a lot for her gallery and takes part in very prestigious art fairs around the world. Right now of course she works from home too but she and her team have built a fantastic online gallery where she can continue to do amazing shows with amazing artists. One of them we share, his name is Victor Castillo and I am sure you all know him by now ;) .

It has been a while. But here we go - finally a new recording of my podcast „heliumTALK, das Kunstgespräch“. It’s one of the excursion episodes with my buddy Jonathan LeVine that we call „Off the record“, cos they are. A lot has happened, but the biggest news for sure from heliumcowboy here in Hamburg is that I have passed the torch on to the next generation and put my son Melvin in charge of the gallery so I can focus only on my art from now on. I’ll explain all this a bit more detailed in this episode, but man, it feels gooooood not to have two full time jobs any longer and I can tell you I am as relaxed as I haven’t been in years. I might even find more time to do podcasts again … we’ll see. But let’s get into this one, it is very special, I haven’t spoken with Jonathan since march, and it is a different world now, so here we go, lot’s to talk about, please enjoy the tenth edition of „Off the record with Jonathan LeVine“.

Not only has it been a while since my last podcast but this one has also been a while in the making. I wanted to speak with Ken Harman Hashimoto already in April, but we only recently managed to get together online, you can guess that it has been and still is a busy time for people running any kind of art business these days, and Ken not only owns three gallery spaces - Spoke Art in New York and San Francisco and Hashimoto Contemporary, also in San Francisco - but Recess, The People’s Print Shop and Paragon Books as well. I very much love that we talked about really burning issues too, I am very thankful to Ken for being honest and open about everything.

Ist nen bisschen her, aber ich dachte ich schiebe mal einen kleinen Podcast dazwischen. Ich kehre immer noch nicht zur Regelmässigkeit zurück, ihr kennt die Gründe - es ist einfach zuviel zu tun immer und alle Zeit und ich muss mal einfach mal an ein paar Ecken reduzieren. Aber es ist natürlich nicht das Ende vom heliumTALK, auf gar keinen Fall: ich nehme mir nur die Freiheit heraus, vor allem im Sommer das Tempo zu drosseln. Für diese Episode sprach ich mit Jörn Wiemann-Huschi über die Viva con Agua arts-Auktion und die Millerntor Gallery, die wie so viele andere im Corona-Sommer alternative Wege finden mussten.

Der erste Podcast mit Gast aus meinem Tonstudio (aka die Galerie) seit "dem Ausbruch"! Ich sprach mit Rene Spiegelberger aus sicherem Abstand (mindestens 1.60 m), aber immerhin von Angesicht zu Angesicht. Rene gründete 2007 die Spiegelberger Stiftung, die sich die Förderung von junger Kunst zum Ziel gesetzt hat, zum Beispiel durch Stipendien, die Unterstützung von Ausstellungen oder Publikationen, aber auch durch Unterrichtsbegleitung, Seminare und das Bereitstellen von kostenlosem Unterrichtsmaterial an Schulen. Rene und sein Team veröffentlichen darüber hinaus auch noch regelmässig eine wunderschöne Reihe von Stiftungsmonographien mit jungen Künstlern unter dem Titel „Unikat“. Jetzt in der aktuellen Situation hat die Spiegelberger-Stiftung aber noch eine ganz neue Form der Förderung ins Leben gerufen - "PArt" nennt sich die Initiative, die Künstler in diesen harten Tagen helfen soll, durch Online-Präsenz und einen Soforthilfe-Fond. Kreatives Krisenmanagement nennen das die Initiatoren, und im Podcast erklärt Rene ausführlich, wie das funktionieren kann.

Yasha Young has been in the art business for a long time, she had her own gallery Strychnin in three major cities, she was the director of the Bloom Art Fair in Cologne, she was in charge for the creation and Realisation of the Urban Nation Museum in Berlin until last year and is working on several huge projects since. Including another museum. A true global citizen she was in her apartment in New York when the pandemic started and has made her way to Berlin only recently, where I spoke with her, from a distance of roughly 300 Kilometers, of course.
