An Honest Conversation About Drinking Pt. 3: Discussing Alcohol Neutrality

May 19 2023 • 38 mins

With Allison’s two year (alcohol) sober-versary coming up, we were candidly talking about alcohol and society’s focus on alcohol at so many events, holidays and special occasions. With the growing sober-curious movement, we’re finally seeing more people openly speak up about their relationships with alcohol, which we think is really encouraging for people who need to hear those messages.

The flip side is that we’ve noticed a divide occurring between ‘drinkers’ and ‘non-drinkers.’ We’ve both been at events on nights where we chose not to drink and were questioned “why aren’t you drinking?” so we’re sure this happens with others as well! It can be uncomfortable if it’s not the appropriate and safe setting to share your story whether that’s as simple as wanting to drive home, get up early the next day, pregnant or abuse - it’s a personal choice.

It got us thinking how our society always wants there to be ‘two sides’ and how you’re supposed to choose a side. We see this with politics, gender identity and so many other avenues. We hope by facilitating this conversation about ‘alcohol neutrality’ that it can help bridge a gap between people so we can all coexist and do what works best for each of us individually.
